New Research: Supporting Indigenous Transitions in the Skilled Trades

The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF-FCA), in collaboration with the Southern First Nations Secretariat (SFNS), is proud to release a new report: Supporting Transitions from School to Work for First Nation Apprentices and Tradespeople.

As Canada’s demand for skilled labour continues to grow, ensuring that First Nation apprentices have the support they need to succeed is more critical than ever. This report examines the unique journey of Indigenous tradespeople in Southern Ontario, identifying the specific barriers and success factors involved in the transition from technical training to the job site.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • Systemic Barriers: Insights into the challenges apprentices face during their first year of employment.

  • Success Strategies: Practical recommendations for colleges, unions, and employers to foster more inclusive workplaces.

  • Voices from the Field: Direct feedback from Indigenous apprentices on what mentorship and support mean to them.
